"Google Me"? Google's Social Media Layer Emerges

Techcrunch asked Google about the ways to slay competing dragons like facebook, in the social networking world. Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google had a few words to say that summarizes all "Google Me is not a product, it’s a social layer across all products"(more after the jump).

Arrington: How important is social to google’s future, and how might google go about competing with a large established competitor?
Schmidt: Our view of social is a little different than what everyone has been writing. we want our core products to get better from social information. The best thing that could happen is if Facebook opened up its network and if we could just use that information…Failing that, there are other ways in which we can get that information.
We are trying to add a social component [to google's core products] to make them even better. With your permission…and knowing more about who your friends are, we can provide more tailored recommendations, search quality will be better.
A reasonable expectation [of launch] will be the Fall.

FriendFeed Offsite With FrienFeed Desktop App.

FriendFeed has revealed another way to keep tab on your friends, off the site. With the new Adobe Air-based desktop application updates whenever your friends post something on FriendFeed on your desktop.
The difference is invisibility this time, that is until there is something to see. Unlike many ways that you keep a watch on your friends like IM notifications, RSS feeds, e-mail digests, or the Facebook app, where you have to flip between what you are doing and the method, Bubbles are the way with Friendfeed desktop app.
You can even comment directly from the bubble that pops up to inform you of update.
You will need Adobe - Air to run the application but it is easy two clicks to install.

A New Tab On My Social!Median Home, TODAY

New Tab On S|M
I visited Social|median today to notice a new tab called "TODAY"(Tabs were too stealthily modified by Jason and Co, which I did not even notice and I liked Jason's comment even more, "Best modifications are which are not noticed by the users!") .
It was an instant hit with me. I have been one of the first users of Social Median and I have seen how it is growing, growing for better everyday.
I am a more of a reclusive type but now I am forced to vote for my favorite newsmakers, clip articles that I find interesting and more and look for best commenters. Best of all, I am interacting with people. I think one of these days I have to thank S|M for making me an open person!
I am looking forward to it! Thanks Jason!

un-"Social Networking" Site Launched.

If you thought the new Social Network Site by Aswath, one of my favorite bloggers in the field of VoIP, is another "me three", I think you need to explore a little bit more.
While it offers all that of a social network site, it differs in very important factors, which allows even hermits like me to have my own Social Network. Those differences are, as told by Enthinai;

  • » You are master of your own domain
  • » Buddies do not have to be part of EnThinnai
  • » Every speck of data is controlled for privacy...
That is very promising! Join EnThinnai (Which is another yes factor, hassle free registration, you only need your OpenID!) and taste for yourself!

socialmedian Goes Public Beta.

socialmedian Opens To The Public

NEW YORK, New York — July 31, 2008 — socialmedian, http://www.socialmedian.com, a new social news network that is working on solving the information overload problem, opened its website to the public today. The public launch follows a fourmonth invite-only alpha period with more than 4300 participants from around the world. The socialmedian site is a public beta and continues to be a work in progress. The company’s model is to ship new features and enhancements every other day in direct response to user feedback. Interested parties are encouraged to check out the company’s about pages at http://www.socialmedian.com/aboutsocialmedian/ about-socialmedian for more detailed background information or to log onto the site at http://www.socialmedian.com and give it a whirl. socialmedian updates can also be followed on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/socialmedian. socialmedian is founded and led by Jason Goldberg who previously founded and was CEO of Jobster Inc. from 2004 to 2007. Goldberg founded socialmedian in January 2008. The company is backed by Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive and personal investments from Goldberg and leading angel investors such as Allen Morgan (Mayfield fund), Reed Hundt (fmr. FCC Chairman), Gordon Crovitz (fmr. WSJ Publisher), Julius Genachowski (LaunchBox Digital), and Johnny Taylor (CEO of IAC’s Rushmore Drive). Morgan, Genachowski, Crovitz, and Don Baer (Burson-Marsteller, fmr. Discover Communications Executive) also serve as active advisors to the company.

Socialmedian has offices in New York, NY and Pune, India. socialmedian is a user-driven website both in the manner in which it has been developed as well as in the functioning of the site.

The company released its first code to an early set of alpha users in March 2008. Users can submit feature requests directly on the website. More than 350 user-submitted features have

been built and launched on the site during the alpha period. socialmedian aims to help anyone anywhere easily discover, share, and discuss news and information that meets their specific topical interest through collaborative filtering by people with common interests. The site was created in response to peoples’ need for better ways to access the rapidly increasing amounts of news content created daily while at the same time enabling them to easily filter it down to just the most personally relevant content. socialmedian helps solve the information overload problem by enabling people with common interests to highlight to each other what to read and discuss on a particular topic from an infinite number of sources, whether it be from a traditional news outlet or a new media website or a blogger with a great analysis.

Socialmedian’s founder, Jason Goldberg, said of the site: “The name socialmedian itself represents what we believe to be the next evolution of media; as information becomes more universally accessible and people socially can create, share, and discuss it online, what we’re witnessing is a massive democratization of information around the globe as people who share common interests can instantly become newsmakers for each other without any regard to political borders or boundaries. Increasingly, when it comes to news and information, it’s no longer about the have’s and have not’s, we are all the social median.”

socialmedian’s thesis is that people who share topical interests can act as effective filters for each other. Here’s how socialmedian works.;

• Users of socialmedian can create “News Networks” on any topic. A News Network enables a group of people to track, share, and discuss aggregated news on a particular topic. Within a News Network, users can share RSS feeds or submit content to socialmedian via a browser bookmarklet, by email, or directly on the site.

• Users “clip” stories of interest to highlight them to people in their Networks.

• Every user gets a personalized news feed on their socialmedian homepage which presents relevant news clippings from people in their networks.

• Users can also specifically follow other users as their “Newsmakers” This enables one user to effectively get their news through another user, following what the other person is clipping, discussing, and sharing. Users can elect to follow all updates from another user or only those updates relevant to that person’s topical interests. For bloggers, journalists and others opinion leaders, becoming a “Newsmaker” provides a new way to engage with their audience.

Here are some facts on the alpha period:

• Socialmedian’s 4300 users have created more than 1125 News Networks

• The most popular News Networks (http://www.socialmedian.com/network?s=popular) on socialmedian include:

o Web 2.0, 1250 users http://www.socialmedian.com/network/web-2-0

o Social Media Watch, 685 users http://www.socialmedian.com/network/socialmedia-watch

o Twitter, 442 users http://www.socialmedian.com/network/twitter

o Campaign 2008, 305 users http://www.socialmedian.com/network/campaign-2008

o iPhone, 116 users http://www.socialmedian.com/network/iphone

• The most popular Newsmakers on socialmedian already have more than 100 followers. http://www.socialmedian.com/users?s=popular

• The U.S. represents just less than 50% of the alpha users.

Top countries represented on socialmedian thus far:

 U.S. 48%

 India 10%

 UK 10%

 Italy 4%

 Canada 3%

 Germany 2%

 Netherlands 2%

 Australia 3%

 China 2%

 Japan 2%

Also notable:

• socialmedian beta also includes several progressive innovations in areas such as use of the Google Social Graph API and Twitter integrations. • With the beta release socialmedian users can now share

news from socialmedian on Twitter from the socialmedian site • The socialmedian site is built upon the Ruby on Rails web framework along with nginx as a web server proxying to Mongrel instances. socialmedian uses multiple MySQL database servers, and memcached;, a distributed memory caching system, to help withstand high traffic. The company has built an engine for crawling and parsing tens of thousands of RSS feeds using solr, an open-source search server based on Lucene search library.

• Socialmedian recently held a global contest for user experience designers to design the socialmedian iphone application, one of the top user requests. The contest concludes on July 28, 2008 and submissions will be displayed on the company’s blog at http://blog.socialmedian.com in the coming days.

For additional assistance, journalists, bloggers, and analysts may contact Scott Wheaton, Scott@socialmedian.com 1-315-751-4372 or Jason Goldberg Jason@socialmedian.com 1-917-455-1020.

Jaiku Joins Google!

Jaiku is joining Google. I found this while over there to find out information Jaiku moving to Google App Engine. Both are good for Jaiku and Jaiku users. Following information was posted on Jaiku.

"While it’s too soon to comment on specific plans, we look forward to working with our new friends at Google over the coming months to expand in ways we hope you'll find interesting and useful. Our engineers are excited to be working together and enthusiastic developers lead to great innovation. We look forward to accomplishing great things together. In order to focus on innovation instead of scaling, we have decided to close new user sign-ups for now.

But fear not, all our Jaiku services will stay running the way you are used to and you will be able to invite your friends to Jaiku. We have put together a quick Q&A about the acquisition.

Economists Social Network With Thunderbird.

I read a nice article about social networking business on the economist. It was an enlightening read about online business. I just wrote about Google complaining about "Social Network Sites Do Not See Our Ads" and perhaps that all does not fit in the same old mold. Yes the cartoonist at the Economist also need change. These days we don't struggle against walls that prevent us from freedom, we break them!, remember Berlin wall, or the Firefly powered "The Wall" by Pink Floyd or similar. This is specially because the article mentions about decade old technology, email.

"The opening of social networks may now accelerate thanks to that older next big thing, web-mail. As a technology, mail has come to seem rather old-fashioned. But Google, Yahoo!, Microsoft and other firms are now discovering that they may already have the ideal infrastructure for social networking in the form of the address books, in-boxes and calendars of their users. “E-mail in the wider sense is the most important social network,” says David Ascher, who manages Thunderbird, a cutting-edge open-source e-mail application, for the Mozilla Foundation, which also oversees the popular Firefox web browser.

That is because the extended in-box contains invaluable and dynamically updated information about human connections. On Facebook, a social graph notoriously deteriorates after the initial thrill of finding old friends from school wears off. By contrast, an e-mail account has access to the entire address book and can infer information from the frequency and intensity of contact as it occurs. Joe gets e-mails from Jack and Jane, but opens only Jane's; Joe has Jane in his calendar tomorrow, and is instant-messaging with her right now; Joe tagged Jack “work only” in his address book. Perhaps Joe's party photos should be visible to Jane, but not Jack.

This kind of social intelligence can be applied across many services on the open web. Better yet, if there is no pressure to make a business out of it, it can remain intimate and discreet. Facebook has an economic incentive to publish ever more data about its users, says Mr Ascher, whereas Thunderbird, which is an open-source project, can let users minimise what they share. Social networking may end up being everywhere, and yet nowhere."

National Science Foundation Goes Social Networking.

I have always been interested in what the Carbon Project was doing. Specially the Open-Geospatial development. It is very good to hear that NSF is taking interest in the project.

BURLINGTON, MA, February 7, 2008 – The Carbon Project announced today that the National Science Foundation has awarded the company a grant to develop a new geosocial networking application called ((Echo))MyPlace®.

((Echo))MyPlace is a "real time, real place" social networking application that combines 2D and 3D mapping from Microsoft Virtual Earth with a peer-to-peer network featuring dynamic streams of location-based digital news, video content and geographically-targeted marketing.

"((Echo))MyPlace has a very modern and exciting look and feel that will appeal to a wide range of users," said Jeff Harrison, President and CEO of The Carbon Project. How Safe Are Social Networking Sites To Children?

Despite the recent focus on restricting access to social networking Web sites to protect children, researchers have found that victimization online is more likely to occur through instant messaging and in chat rooms.

The Growing up With Media survey asked nearly 1,600 Internet users between the ages of 10 to 15 about their online experiences over the past year. Fifteen percent reported an unwanted sexual solicitation in that time, with about one-fourth of those occurring on a social networking site. Thirty-three percent reported online harassment, with about one-fourth of the incidents occurring on a social networking site.
Among targeted youth, solicitations were reported to be via instant messaging (43 percent of incidents) or in chat rooms (32 percent of incidents). Harassment was more common in instant messaging (55 percent of incidents). The authors suggest that parents should focus on children’s online behaviors and psychosocial issues rather than on restricting use of social networking sites.

They also recommend that policy aimed at reducing children’s victimization on the Internet focus on mental health interventions for vulnerable youth, and broad Internet safety education.

The research information is available from
the February ssue of Pediatrics, the peer-reviewed, scientific journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

Working Group on Social Networking Formed with All the States, Except Texas

According to the following news release by News.com on MySpace news conference on MySpace Security. Something that is lacking in most social networking sites. The new Multi-State Working Group on Social Networking, led by attorneys general Roy Cooper of North Carolina and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, consists of Nigam as well as the attorneys general of 49 total U.S. states and the District of Columbia. The group has released a "Joint Statement on Key Principles of Social Networking," which it hopes will achieve industry wide approval from other social-networking sites and Internet providers.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott said later on Monday that his office declined to participate because he didn't consider the proposed safety measures to be strong enough and did not join the group.

Here is the news com release MySpace safety plan is smoke and mirrors.

A coalition of law enforcement authorities and representatives from social-networking site MySpace.com gathered Monday morning to unveil an extensive new plan for ensuring the safety of minors on the Internet.

Under the agreement, MySpace has pledged to work with the attorneys general on a set of principles to combat harmful material on social-networking sites (pornography, harassment, cyberbullying, and identity theft, among other issues), better educate parents and schools about online threats, cooperate with law enforcement officials around the country, as well as develop new technology for age and identity verification on social-networking sites.

Time for socialising the real way! (Indian Way ?!!)

Not that anything wrong with it. India has a history of socializing longer than most people in other countries can even imagine. When Europeans were still finding out how to live in caves, India had two major civilizations around it. They knew how to count, they wrote books, they traveled, ( they had free travelers rest houses in each major village or cities). So I guess it is safe to say they were socializing, long before, in many different ways, perhaps some what primitive in todays standards of facebooks and myspaces.
But the article I am going to point you to does not take you through history lessons. It just tells us about social networking fatigue! in modern day world.
"What was once novel becomes routine. And when you reach that stage, it's time to step back, take a deep breath and ask yourself where your real world friends are. You could pop into a bar or have them home for a real chat, for between work, play and other things you do in your life it's just not possible to keep up."
Yes it is little different for us in bay area, SF CA. I have found more real life friends to go out and have a drink with. I also keep my real friends close at hand to go out and get drunk, too.
But there is some truth to what the author, Rahul Sharma, has to say as well. The newness of social networking can die off fast. Once you know the layout, it is like playing GT4 on Playstation. You cover all the circuits once or sometimes twice. You go through the races, win cheat and soon it is over. Now you are looking at sony to release the new version. While waiting you load the game once or twice just for the heck of it.
So there is no facebook two or myspace 2.0, and people run over to other networks like orkut, dating sites or million other sites that has Social Network Badge on it, like specific social networking sites catering to specific groups such as hamster owners.. But some stick to those social networks because they work for them. You can find new channels and people in your profession or carrier. But it is hard for people like me who wear multiple hats, professor or scientist by the morning, consultant and systems designer by afternoon, and blogger by night. But I am very secular as well. My cell phone say do not leave a message becaus I do not listen to them, keep the caller ID open and if I know you, I will call you. Office phones are another matter. Some one will answer or I will, if I am in a good none busy mood.
So do I have time to digg deep into social networking sites. Not really. I get dragged there by people I know and the circle gets you some times. Yes Social networking fatigue could get you if you are on/in a boring site. (which does not?). It might be also that people tend to look for next best thing, according to the author, next best thing!
"Communities are fun, so is social networking, but for me the newness of the experience is beginning to fade. I can't hang around on the same site forever because the next one that appears around the corner might be just that much more exciting."
So it could be the reason that second life attracts and keeps people, because of the variety and the different ways of socializing!
You can find Time for socialising the real way here.
