"Top Chef" host Padma Lakshmi's marriage to Nobel Prize-winning author Salman Rushdie is over, according to a rep for the author.
"Salman Rushdie has agreed to divorce his wife, Padma Lakshmi, because of her desire to end their marriage," spokeswoman Jin Auh said in a statement issued to Reuters. "He asks that the media respect his privacy at this difficult time," the statement also said.
While Rushdie was busy being knighted by Queen Elizabeth II last week, his much younger wife was spotted partying till the wee hours at the Rose Bar at the Gramercy Park Hotel with a well-known chef, who also happens to be married.
A source revealed that the two looked ‘very interested’ in each other and were oblivious to the world around them.
"They seemed to be quite interested in what each other had to say. They were oblivious to the people around them," the New York Post quoted the source, as saying.
A friend of the model however said that the two are ‘just friends’.
When the Indian-born Rushdie started his romance with the model more than 20 years his junior, the British tabloids made much of their differences in age and intellectual stature.
But Rushdie always defended his wife.
“Anyone who’s met Padma knows she’s as intelligent as they come,” he told The Times of London in a 2005 interview.
