What does JOOST mean, the upcoming IPTV service?

“ALLEEN JOOST ZAL HET WETEN" (This is in Dutch, the language of The Netherlands[Holland] and a part of Belgium.)
Literally;

"ALLEN JOOST ZAL HET WETEN"
"Only Devil will it know"

(Only Devil will know it)

So does it mean I have to go and ask Joost (Devil) the meaning of JOOST?

Don't be panic

Now I know why I will never have anything to do with movies. My English Professor never thought much of my papers. I doubt she would have ever kept a copy of my papers. Most probably she would have shivered upon seeing my papers and sent then straight to the dust bin (thrash can), what ever.
But Pisit Pornkitti (it is a real name, in Thailand your name might sound funny too!) had a different English teacher. She kept the paper, and now there is a movie out of it! It is in flash but it is a start. Michael Hightower at mphtower.com has written it. Hello Mike, want an unreadable paper, written even longer time ago?
To see the movie, and the post, follow the links.

When does social networking (Fans) overtakes a brand (Ikea) ?

I have purchased stuff (from furniture to meatballs) from Ikea and put the pieces together to create a something badly needed in my apartment. But I hate being inside ikea. I would rather go over the catalog's, choose what I need, then dash into the ikea store (there is one less than 6 miles from where I live) and dash out. Lay out the stuff and build
I guess getting a PHD in physics and staying smart pays off. I have never called a support line for any of the products I have bought. One reason, I do my research very well before I purchase any thing that is going to matter. And most of the problems that comes up, I fix it myself. Be it my computers, HDTVs, Cameras, and Ikea furniture.

But it seems quite different for most of the people and I do understand. The Associated Press article that I have provided link below, explains how Ikea fans got together to help each other out. Ikea, the world's largest furniture manufacturer manages to keep prices low through "automatic selling"; customers pull their purchases from warehouse shelves in flat-packed components. It's customer support comes in the form of two or three page document instructing how to put the furniture together.

"By design, IKEA is not set up to provide personalized help and information, but IKEAFANS is," notes Susan Martin, founder of IKEAFANS.com. For those people who are considering, planning or even currently installing an IKEA kitchen or other project, support, advice and/or one-on-one instruction is available from IKEAFANS.com.

The site's motto, "Personalizing the IKEA Experience" crystallizes the IKEAFANS way. Participants in the site's community forums enthusiastically welcome newcomers and jump at the chance to share information, assist with planning, review layouts, give free design advice and offer answers to obscure questions on just about any topic related to IKEA -- all in real time.

I for one will visit IKEAFANS.com, may be provide some help or advice where possible.

Wikipedia banned from college?

According to a post on IPDemocracy, Middlebury college's History Dept. Says No More Wikipedia.
The college might as well say no iPod, no fast food and may be romance. The fault is not in referencing an encyclopedia, it is not knowing how to refer. Straight out copying is not referencing and and if you do refer, verifying your references might help.
But I am sure wikipedia will not die just yet or may be it is time to start stupedia.

The New MTV over IPTV, over Joost

I have been beta testing Joost for a while now and learning more about it. More I watch it, more I like it. It is a difference from watching tiny teeny videos on youtube. I can watch full screen video on my 17" notebook screen and no lags and not grany. I have seen wide screen videos but they were not HD.
With the new release of software they also added some more channels. Here are some press info on the Viacom Joost deal that has youtube sweating.

Janus Friis, founder of Joost said, “We built this platform from the ground up, with companies like Viacom in mind. Our platform provides scalable distribution, in a completely safe environment that protects the interest of content owners and advertisers, while delighting viewers. We’re extremely excited about this partnership and look forward to enabling Viacom to reach new audiences for its new and classic programming.”

MTV Networks will provide premier content from several of its brands for launch. MTV will offer popular shows, both past and present, including Laguna Beach, Beavis & Butthead, Real World, Punk’d and My Super Sweet Sixteen, while COMEDY CENTRAL will feature episodes from Stella, CCP’s and Freak Show. Nickelodeon, CMT: Country Music Television, MTV2, Logo, Spike TV, mtvU, and Gametrailers.com will also provide content. VH1’s offerings will include episodes of Flavor of Love, Surreal Life, and I Love New York. BET’s Networks’ offerings will include some of its biggest shows, including Beef, DMX: Soul of a Man, Comic View and recent smash hit American Gangster. Also, Paramount Pictures, Paramount Vantage and Paramount Classics will be providing full-length feature films from its catalog of classics and recent releases.

Lonelygirl15 says "I Know Who Killed Me"

weseepeople: Lonelygirl15 found, and she is an actress! was published a while ago and now it is time see if she could do some real acting job.
The lonelygirl15 seems to be producing a movie with controversial actress Lindsay Lohan. The idea of social networking site like Youtube or other sites could be used to ones or twos or threes advantage if used right. Like Lonelygirl15 and her producers did.
The pay off for every one involved including viewers seems to be right. The popular movies or short takes may pave the way for movies or TV Shows, depending on the popularity.
May be sites like people aggregator could provide a way for the general measurement of a product or an articles popularity and pass it over to the big boys.

People Aggregator, I will be working on it and writting more about it.

Mental Gymnastics

ABC News's Lee Dye reported a while ago about being social. Being socially active may keep one from declining mental state. Specially as one ages. Follow the link for the complete article.

New research suggests that just sitting around and chatting with friends may help keep our brains fit enough to fight off mental decline, especially as we age.

Yakking it up with cohorts, it turns out, may keep the mental machinery well oiled.

We've heard for years about what's supposed to happen as we get older. The old brain just doesn't click along at the same speed, the memory begins to fail, and the biggest intellectual challenge of the day may be deciding which channel to watch.

The way to fight that, so we've been told, is to keep the old noggin busy. So millions turn to crossword puzzles, reading and various hobbies, and that's supposed to help.

But to psychologist Oscar Ybarra of the University of Michigan, that picture looked very incomplete.

Mathematically filtering DIGG or Digg get dugged at USC

I came across this paper,"Social Networks and Social Information Filtering on Digg." (Preprint) via another project that I am interested in, Lyceum. (It is another post as it is a big project, multiuser, multiblog version of wordpress!, for now. Follow the link below to find out more)
The manager of Lyceum has a blog that discusses social trends, ID and information, called Unit Structures.
The article on this site lead me to the paper mentioned above. I already read the paper but as much as it makes sense to me, it is hard for me to rewrite about it. But it made me learn more about the DIGG and the like. So I am going to steal the next bits from Unit Structures. According to Unit Structures, Kristina Lerman, the author of the paper and a professor at University of Southern California found that;
* The top-rated diggers don't necessarily submit the stories that get the most diggs (i.e. the top diggers aren't necessarily the best diggers).
* The top 3% of diggers are responsible for 35% of the stories that hit the front page.
* The top 3% of diggers are disproportionately responsible for submissions (28%), diggs (11%) and comments (8%).
* Well-known diggers (people with lots of fans) have disproportionate influence in the service due to social filtering.
* People dig their friend's stories - not random submissions by friendless losers ;) like me I guess!!

This is the best way anyone could explain the tyranny of the minority. So if digging is your interest, follow the links to get the paper, read a better article on it than this and perhaps run a multiuser, multi blog.

Second Life and Vista Troubles.

Even though Microsoft had a splashy party in this virtual world about Vista release, I guess neither Linden Labs nor Microsoft worried about the interactivity of the two systems. According to a post by Tips Dr.,which lead me to the post on SL, the virtual world does not work in Vista due to incompatibility between Graphics drivers.
I really wonder if SL had so many users, then how come at least some of them were not beta testing the Vista. May be on the other hand not many people cared about Microsoft Vista. So it is may be because so few at SL is technically minded.
But visit to SL blog shows that the engineers are working on it and the blog ost received 143 comments.
The Post says;
"A number of people have been asking about support for Windows Vista.

The changes that are currently in the First Look Viewer are an important precursor to any reasonable attempt for us to debug problems with running Second Life under Windows Vista. These changes are just about ready for an official release, at which point we will start the process of ensuring that Second Life runs under Vista.

We hope to have the majority of these issues addressed in the next few weeks, and apologize to Windows Vista users that are currently unable to run Second Life.

Thanks for your patience,

-Steve"

And following the comments, I might be wrong, some people have been running SL on Vista for a while!

Bebo the social network, gives you to chose the ads you see

Advertisements are the key ingredients of any site, be it a social networking, search engine or just a blog like mine. The revenue drives where the portal moves. But as you know these ads have angered, annoyed or all together prevented user from returning to a site. Remember those pop up days? I do not know if the those pop up ads are still prevalent. I get one or two pop ups that mange to get through my filters, firewalls and my good old FireFox.
I am also using IE7 and so far had a good experience.
So how do you make sure that you don't hurt your user population and yet manage to publish ads on your site? Well Bebo thinks, letting user chose what ads he/she wants to see might makes a difference. Is this profiled ads? Last time I heard was Turn was going against Google in Advertisement space.
While seeking answer to those questions, I came up with an article on adweek. May be that is what you read instead of this blurb ;). Follow the link.

Social-Networking Sites get neked! logically

An article in Business week is letting us know that many a social networking sites opening their sites to content developers. Basically providing an API to include services and mainly members into content rich services.
These mega sites invite large and rich companies like phone companies, music and film producers into their fold. This is a two way street, both the sides benefit, may at the expense of users!
Seeing the light, Now, several social networks are about to open up. Facebook—aimed at college students and a pioneer in opening up its APIs—will move its developer program out of beta testing. Rivals such as News Corp.'s MySpace.com, LinkedIn, Friendster, and Google's orkut are expected to follow suit and open their code to third-party developers this year as well.
The largest and most talked about social networking site, Linden Labs Second Life, did not get mentioned in the article but are even going into lengths such as open sourcing client portion of the software used to run the Second Life.

Social.com is for sale!

PRWeb) February 13, 2007 -- Guided Tour Software, Inc. is announcing that Social.com will be made available for sale in early 2007 and that prospective buyers can register their interest at http://www.social.com.
"The sale of Social.com will provide a timely benefit to the successful buyer," said Scott Carter, President of Guided Tour Software, Inc. "Social networking sites are coming online at a rapid pace with the successes of MySpace and YouTube, and a highly relevant name such as Social.com will allow a company to stand out from the crowd. Premium domain names have been appreciating at a consistently high rate over the years, making the purchase of Social.com a solid investment for the future."

The name "social" is unique in that it produces hundreds of millions of English search engine results and millions of results in other languages. As a generic, recognizable name with international relevance, Social.com is well positioned for many business ventures. According to Carter, "Given the global appeal of the name social, the interesting question is not who the eventual buyer may be, but from which country that buyer will emerge."

With the name "social" sitting at the crossroads of social networking, social media and social issues, Social.com can make both a business and political impact. While Carter understands the broad nature of the word social, he believes that Social.com can use that flexibility as a strength in engaging areas such as mobile social networking, video sharing, Web 2.0 applications, politics, dating or even Social Security services.

Random Flickr Photo blogging

I landed on a blog called "If I ran the zoo", well I do like the zoo but doubt I want to run it.
But I did find a gem of an idea, at the site, not an animal but a way to socialize, get to know someone and that persons camera!
The IIRTZ will give a random # every week and one is supposed to search Flickr for the an image associated with that number.
Then you write a small writeup about the photo and you will be soon riding the latest Flickr wave.
My next post will be a RFB, Random Flickr-Blogging, as the wanna be animal controllers call it.
If you want to do the same you may want to visit the links below. My RFB will be based on 3459.

Social networks reference books

Jian-ming Lee over at Socialnetworks.org has compiled a list of references for the Social Networking. The list is bare minimum and gives you chance to add any other reference material that you know of.
As it is the list in an aid for further searching as there is no reviews nor links to the author or the publisher. Never the less, it directed me to a book that I bought.

Blogsphere is about to get measured

The blogging times inform us that Federated Media is getting together with Comscore networks to measure you and I (Independent authors) as the number of social networks and the authors have risen dramatically.
The Federated media is supporting independent website authors and audiences, by connecting them to marketers in an ongoing and robust conversation that feeds everyone involved, According to the FM website. And if you look at the About page, I am convinced as I know the chairman, John Battelle, from my alma mater University of California, Berkeley. So I did not have to look further. But if you want to confirm to yourself, just look at the list of authors.
Comscore networks is known to measure anything and everything in the digital age.
So the final product of this union should be an interesting. “We’re delighted to be working with comScore on this important measurement effort,” said John Battelle, chairman and publisher of Federated Media. “If anyone can provide the audience measurement services needed by the blogosphere, it’s comScore.”
